
This rare visitor from Mexico is recognized by its thick decurved bill and purple tail. Male: Dark green overall, with a black throat blending into the blue-green breast. All but the central tail feathers are purple with black edging. Female: Green on upperparts and sides. White underparts are bisected by black throat stripe, which fades to green on the belly. Tail feathers have purple bases, black bands, and white tips on the outer pairs. Juvenile: Similar to adult female, but ventral stripe often missing on chin. Sides of throat and breast have cinnamon blotches. Young females have mostly blackish tails with little purple.
