13 Without any obvious size reference, we have to look for some less obvious clues to the identity of this blackbird. If you look closely, it has a pale eye, which points us in the direction of Great-tailed Grackle. Otherwise it is superficially similar to a female Brewer's Blackbird. In addition to the eye, note the bill shape and length. The bill of this bird is very deep at the base and is essentially as long as the head. Brewer's have much shorter bill in relation to the head size and the bill is not nearly as deep at the base. The pale buffy breast on a female Great-tailed is much paler than the breast of female Common Grackle and warmer in color than the breast of female Brewer's.
14 This adult male Great-tailed Grackle was part of a pair that seemed to have taken up residence in Fields, Harney County, Oregon. It was photographed on 22 May 2015 and present throughout Memorial Day Weekend.
