This species is a rare visitor from Asia. Alternate Adult: Plumage pattern similar to alternate Surfbird, but more elongated in shape with a longer bill, and dark gray legs. Upperparts dark gray-brown to blackish with pale feather edges and extensive rufous on the scapulars. Underparts white with extensive black streaking on breast, sometimes forming a solid black area. Belly and sides are sparsely spotted with unique heart-shaped black spots. Basic Adult: Similar to basic Red Knot, but with longer bill and grayish or greenish legs. Upperparts light gray-brown with pale feather edges and an indistinct whitish supercilium. Underparts white with very fine streaks on the breast and sides and sparse spotting on the belly. Juvenile: Like basic adult, but with darker and browner upperparts and more extensive whitish supercilium. Breast shows a buff wash and is extensively streaked with brown, with spots extending along the sides. In flight: Shows a very thin white wing stripe. White uppertail coverts create a white rump patch.
