This is the largest and most colorful flycatcher in the east. Upperparts are olive-brown. The wings are darker with whitish feather edges on the tertials and secondaries, and rufous on the primaries. The tail has extensive rufous, mostly visible on the underside. The face and upper breast are dark gray, with a clean demarcation between it and the bright yellow lower breast, belly, and undertail coverts. Peaked crown often raised to form a crest. The bill is black, with a paler base on the lower mandible.

Call is a loud WHEEEEEP. Also a burry prrrrrreeeet.

Habitat:

Open deciduous and mixed woodlands, woodland edge, wooded swamps, parks.

Behavior:

Usually stays high in trees. More often heard than seen. Nests in cavities, either natural or old woodpecker holes. Nests often include shed snake skin or crinkly plastic.

Feeding:

Forages for insects by flycatching, gleaning from foliage, or capturing on the ground. Also eats small fruit.
