This Asian species is very similar to Wandering Tattler. The two are best differentiated by voice. The bill is black, with a pale gray to yellowish base. The legs are dull yellow. The wing tips extend just to the tip of the tail, while the wings of Wandering Tattler extend well beyond the tail. At extremely close range, note that the nasal grooves extend about half-way down the bill (longer on Wandering). Alternate Adult: Pale gray upperparts, sometimes with a slight brownish cast. White supercilium and dark lores are obvious.
The uppertail coverts are barred. The underparts are white with dark barring on the breast and sides. The barring does not extend onto the belly. Basic Adult: Plain gray upperparts and breast. The sides and belly are white. Juvenile: Similar to Basic Adult, but with extensive pale notching on scapulars, coverts, tertials, and tail feathers.

Nests on tundra near water. In migration, rocky and sandy coasts.

Behavior:

Usually found singly or in small groups. More likely than Wandering to use sandy beaches and mudflats, but also uses rocky shores.

Probes for marine invertebrates.
