Medium-sized Asian flycatcher with long, pointed wings that extend about halfway down the tail. Adult: Dark brownish-gray head, nape, back, wings, and tail. Dark eye surrounded by a conspicuous, complete, white eye ring. Pale grayish lores are noticeable on an otherwise dark head, dark bill. Broad white submalar is separated from white throat by a narrow brown submalar stripe that fans out into a broad triangular brown patch on the foreneck. Underparts white, crisp heavy brown streaking on sides of the breast and flanks with a band of weaker streaks connecting across the upper breast. Dark wings show a single white wing bar. Juvenile: Faint spots and dark bars on upperparts. Very similar Dark-sided Flycatcher is more earthy brown above, has longer primary extension, smudgy streaking forms a more solid looking band across the breast, less conspicuous thinner eye ring, and lores that are only slightly paler than the rest of the head. Spotted Flycatcher is even paler above, has a very weak eye ring, and streaking is limited to the upper breast and is very diffuse.

Habitat:

Coniferous forests, woodlands, forest edges and open areas with scattered brush.

Behavior:

Forages by perching, flying out to grab prey, and returning to perch. Migratory.

Feeding:

Diet consists of insects.
