Chicken-like, bulky, with short legs and tail. Adult male has bold vertical rufous bars on flanks, dark patch on belly, grayish back and wings patterned subtly with shades of brown, rufous tail, clean gray neck, stubby gray bill, and orange head with dusky auricular patch and crown. Female lacks dark belly patch and has faded head coloration.

Habitat:

Lowland agricultural fields, farmlands, hedges.

Behavior:

Walks along ground, usually in small coveys. Nest is in a scrape, lined with fine grasses, and concealed by standing vegetation or rocks. Popularly hunted game bird.

Feeding:

Forages along ground, pecking at seeds, grains, and occasional insects.
