
Large gray, brown and black nightjar, very similar to North American Common Nighthawk. Patterned to blend in easily with surroundings. Dark eye. Tiny gray bill. Long wingtips and tail. Tiny feet. Adult Male: Gray head with brown face. White submoustachial stripe and white throat. Upperparts gray overall patterned with black and white splotching, bars and streaks. White patch at the base of the outer primaries is less extensive than the patch on a Common Nighthawk. Underparts pale gray with dark barring. Broad whitish tips to outer tail feathers, central tail feathers lack white tips. Adult female: Similar to male, but brownish tail tips.

Habitat:
Open forests and woodlands, scrubby areas and farmland.
Behavior:
Birds in northern section of range migrate. Usually roosts on ground during day and forages at night.
Feeding:
Diet consists of insects and spiders.
