This large kingbird is recognized by its uniformly gray upperparts, long heavy bill, and contrasting dark mask that runs from the base of the bill through the auriculars. The wings are slightly darker with thin pale feather edges. The tail is long and notched. Underparts, including the underside of the wings, are white with a very pale gray wash on the breast. The undertail coverts may be washed pale yellow. The reddish-orange crown patch is usually concealed. Juveniles are similar to adults, but brownish on the back and with rusty feather edges on the wings and tail. Thick-billed Kingbird is duskier above, yellow to creamy-white below, and has a heavier bill. Ranges do not overlap, but both species have occurred far out of range as vagrants.
