Large dark gray bunting with heavy pinkish bill. Adult male: Dark grayish plumage overall. Dark eye. Dark streaks on back. Dark wing feathers with pale gray edges giving wings a striped look. Dark tail. Pink legs. Adult female: Brownish overall. Pale gray-brown face with darker brown cheek patch, crown, and nape. Pale grayish throat and underparts. Brownish back. Brownish edging on dark wing feathers create strong pattern. Noticeable reddish-brown rump and tail. Immature male: Similar to adult male, but back and wings have bold, broad, buffy-brown edging on feathers. Immature female: Similar to adult female, but paler overall.

Habitat:

Shrubby areas and coniferous or mixed forests with thickets of scrub.

Behavior:
