Adult male has bright yellow throat extending onto breast, a foreshortened yellow supercilium that ends just behind the eye, yellow arc below eye, black forehead and limited black on face, relatively small, short bill, bluish-gray head and upperparts, two white wing bars, and white underparts with thick black streaks along the flanks. Female is similar, but slightly duller, with light brown wash over belly. Immatures have same face pattern and wing bars but are brownish-gray above, buffy below, with faint streaking underneath. Yellow-throated Warbler has more patterned black and white markings on face and much longer bill; also note range.

Various whistled phrases, ending in a trill. Call is a sweet chip note.

Habitat:

Montane pine woodlands.

Behavior:

Creeps along branches in upper canopy; typically seen alone or in pairs. Nest is a cup of fine materials among needles at the tip of a pine frond.

Feeding:

Forages high in pine trees, gleaning foliage for insects and other small prey; occasionally flycatches.
