
This species is slightly smaller and paler than Northern Flicker. Upperparts are golden brown with fine black barring. The crown and nape are brown, while the face is gray. Males show a red malar stripe. The underparts are whitish to pale buff, with black spots broadening to crescents or bars on the belly. The black patch on the upper breast is broader than that of Northern Flicker. In flight, the undersides of the wings are yellow, as are the feather shafts, and the white rump is obvious.

Call is a loud TEE-ew. Also a series of wicka wicka wicka notes.
Habitat:
Saguaro Cactus forest, riparian woods.
Behavior:
Unlike other woodpeckers, flickers spent a lot of time foraging on the ground.
Feeding:
Eats mostly insects, but will also eat fruit.
