Resembles Black-bellied Whistling-Duck in size and shape, but Fulvous Whistling-Ducks lack the strong patterns of that species. The head, breast and belly are a warm buffy brown, darker on the crown and hindneck. The throat may appear pale gray. The feathers on the back and wings are dark with rufous edges. The flanks are marked with white streaks, and the undertail coverts are white. The bill and feet are dark gray. The feathering on the neck forms little furrows, similar to those found on geese. In flight, the upper and lower surfaces of the wings are uniformly dark. A light band separates the dark back from the dark tail. Feet extend beyond the end of the tail. Sexes similar. Juveniles resemble adults.
