Slender. Bill broader and shorter than other scrub-jays. Deep blue head. Auriculars black but blended with head. Narrow white line above the eye blends with its distinctive whitish forehead. Pale grayish below with faint brownish streaks; blue necklace separates whitish, lightly streaked throat. Blue wings and brownish back. Tail long and blue; under tail coverts rich blue.

Voice:

Agitated, scratchy call resembling other scrub-jays, but raspier and less harsh. Also makes soft rattle.

Habitat:

Exclusively Florida oak scrub.

Behavior:

Tame. Will approach humans and readily eat food from their hands. Cooperative breeder, offspring usually stays to help raise young for a year or more. Individuals may stay to watch for predators, while the rest of the family group forages. Caches large quantities of acorns in sand to consume year round.

Feeding:

Varied diet consists of insects and spiders, lizards, frogs, berries, and seeds; especially acorns.
