Hard to access Chino Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains is apparently the place to look for this species. We had at least five individuals during a mile-plus walk into the upper canyon and from eBird reports it looks like some folks have been finding them in the lower canyon as well. This bird was photographed at Chino Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona on 20 April 2015.
Even with just a dorsal view, Five-striped Sparrows are quite distinctive. They are large, heavy-billed and have a unique combination of medium to dark gray and chestnut-brown upper parts with no dorsal streaking. This bird was at Chino Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona on 20 April 2015.
