
Mexican species; barely reaches north of U.S. border. Distinct small-headed, hunched shape typical of trogons. Adult male has gray wings; green back, head, and breast; red underparts; white border between red belly and green breast; dark eye with red orbital ring; and yellow bill. Narrow, long tail is dull orange above, white below with sections of fine black barring. Adult female is gray where male is green, with white mark behind eye, and red confined to undertail coverts. Juvenile is like female with white spots on wing coverts.

Habitat:
Riparian and sycamore woodlands.
Behavior:
Sits motionless on elevated perch, flying suddenly to make feeding trips. Nest is in tree cavity, typically an old woodpecker hole.
Feeding:
Feeding is arboreal, flighty; often hovers. Eats a variety of insects and fruit.
