This species is nearly identical to Western Wood-Pewee. The two are best distinguished by voice. Eastern Wood-Pewee is lighter overall, with a more olive cast than the Western. Upperparts are olive-gray, with two whitish wing bars and a very faint light eye ring. The underparts are dull whitish, with a dusky wash over the breast and sides. The lower mandible is yellow-orange with a dusky tip. The primary projection is fairly long, but not as long as the tail projection. Juvenile has buffy wing bars and a darker lower mandible.

Song is a clear slurred whistle: PEE-ah-Wee.

Habitat:

Deciduous and mixed woodlands, riparian corridors.

Behavior:

Tail is often held at a downward angle, which may be useful in separating this species from Western Wood-Pewee.

Feeding:

Flycatches from an exposed perch, usually high in the canopy.
