Brownish and cryptically patterned above, bright yellow below, with a bold black V on breast and striped head. In flight, note white outer tail feathers. In basic plumage, yellow underparts are duller than alternate plumage. Sexes are similar. Best distinguished from Western Meadowlark by range and voice, though Eastern averages buffier flanks with streakier sides, whiter sides of throat, and more white in outer tail feathers.

Habitat:

Open fields, pastures, farmlands, meadows, grasslands.

Behavior:

Often perches on fenceposts. Sometimes form flocks of dozens in winter. Domed nest is placed on ground, woven into grasses. Males may have more than one mate during breeding season.

Feeding:

Feeds on ground; eats seeds and insects.
