Alternate Adult has dark body with rusty sides, thin dark neck, dark head with yellow plumes on face, red eye, and thin, pointy bill. Basic Adult is black and white overall, with dark back, gray sides, smudgy neck, dark peaked crown, white throat, and white face with dark auriculars. Contrast between dark and light on face is indistinct. Sexes are similar. Juvenile is like Basic Adult with some rusty tones on neck. Similar Horned Grebe has a flatter crown, crisper contrast between dark upperparts and light underparts, a thicker neck, and a diagnostic pale tip to the bill if seen at close range.

Field Notes
Eared and Horned Grebes are most confusing when they are molting, producing the frustrating "Ornery" or "Feared" Grebe. If you're too distant to see if the bill is evenly-shaped with a whitish tip (Horned) or more thorn-like and ever-so-slightly upturned, suggesting a turnstone's bill (Eared), then notice if the head is quite flat-crowned (Horned) or really small and with a peak at the crown (Eared). Eared Grebes often swim with their tiny head and wormy neck pushed very slightly forward, and they have a more abrupt, fluffier hind end than Horned (the posture is variable).
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this regularly, highly confident.
