This species appears rather drab compared to other Empidonax flycatchers. Upperparts are olive-gray, grayer on the head. The dusky wings show two dull whitish wing bars and short primary projection. The tail appears fairly long and squared or slightly notched at the end. The whitish eye ring is conspicuous, and sometimes extends to the lores. The bill is narrow and fairly long. The lower mandible is yellow, gradually darkening to a dusky tip. The throat is a dingy whitish. The breast is washed olive. The belly is yellowish. Adults molt after reaching their wintering grounds, so birds appear worn and faded during autumn migration. Juveniles show buffy wing bars.
Length: 13 (cm) Wingspan: 20 (cm)
Voice:
Song is variable, but usually contains three elements: a quick chrip, and ascending grrrip, and a high whistled pweeet. Call is a dry pit, or two-note dew-hick.
Habitat:
Open forest, chaparral, brushy areas.
Behavior:
Not as active as some flycatchers. Tail flicks are less frenetic than similar Hammond's Flycatcher and are rarely paired with wing flicks. Nests in low shrubs.
Feeding:
Takes insects by flycatching, gleaning from foliage, and occasionally from the ground.
Field Notes
The first element of the song of Dusky Flycatcher is very strongly accented on the first note; it's a snappy "PEEdik". The appealing and distinctive "du-hic" note is uttered by ads. on their breeding grounds, generally most often in the warmer hours.
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this regularly, highly confident.
