This Eurasian species strongly resembles Spotted Sandpiper in appearance and behavior. Alternate Adult: Dark brown above, with fine black streaks. The tertails are barred with black. The sides of the upper breast match the color of the upperparts and are also finely streaked with black. The remainder of the underparts are bright white. The bill is blackish with a dull pinkish base. The legs are olive to yellowish. Basic Adult: Similar to alternate plumage, but lacks black streaks. Bill is gray at the base. The legs are dull yellow. Juvenile: Feathers of the upperparts have black and buff fringes. Tertials are entirely fringed with buff and black dots. In flight: Extensive white wing stripe is longer than that of Spotted Sandpiper.

Habitat:

Nests along rocky shorelines of freshwater lakes and rivers. Non-breeding birds use a variety of fresh and saltwater habitats.

Behavior:

Constantly bobs tail when feeding. Flies with stiff, rapid, shallow wingbeats, interspersed with short glides.

Feeding:

Feeds on insects.
