Medium-sized Eurasian diving duck, similar in color and shape to Canvasback, with a slightly smaller tricolored bill. Relatively thick-necked with a long, sloping forehead and a fairly large, barely sloping bill that is bluish-gray on the basal half, bluish white over much of the outer half, and black on the tip. Male: Chestnut head and neck with black breast, rump and tail. Pale whitish-gray body with fine, dark barring on back. Female: Grayish-brown body with dark brown chest. Brown head with pale brown face. Whitish eye ring, lores, and throat. More compact and shorter-necked than Canvasback with a unique bill pattern. Male Canvasbacks have blackish crown instead of chestnut. Female Canvasbacks are paler than Common Pochard with dark lores. Redheads are much more round-headed, with a steep rather than sloping forehead angle, have a smaller bill with a distinctly concave culmen, and have darker backs. Redhead X Canvasback hybrids are unusual and lack the distal bill stripe.
