Larger than blackbirds, with a noticeably graduated tail, heavy bill, and pale eye. Male is entirely glossy black; at close range, iridescence is bluish on head and neck, with bronze or multicolored sheen on rest of body. Female is similar but has reduced iridescence on body and slightly smaller tail. Juveniles are brown all over, lacking gloss. In level, direct flight, note the wide, squared-off tail and relatively short and broad wings.

Habitat:

Fields, farmland, suburbs, urban parks.

Behavior:

Abundant and widespread, often seen in backyards. In winter, forms massive flocks with blackbirds and cowbirds.

Feeding:

Omnivorous, often feeding on ground; eats insects, seeds, fruit, small animals, garbage. Sometimes visits bird feeders.
