Alternate adult male is vibrant, with rich chestnut sides, bright yellow crown, black face, white cheeks, white underparts, black-streaked back, and dark wings with two pale wing bars. Alternate adult female is like male but with less chestnut on flanks and limited black on the face. Basic adult male has plain gray face with a pale lime-greenish crown and back, grayish-white underparts, limited chestnut on sides, and two narrow wing bars. Immatures are relatively drab, with gray underparts, gray face, greenish upperparts and crown, double wing bars, and a small white eye ring. In flight, note white tail corners.

Song is a clear, whistled phrase, ending with two or three louder notes: very-very-pleased-to-MEET-YOU. Similar to Yellow and Hooded Warblers. Call is a dry chip note.
Deciduous woodlands, old clearcuts, riparian zones, early-successional forests, scrubby edges. During migration and winter, uses a wide variety of forest types.
Tail is often cocked-up like a wren's. Nest is a cup of bark strips and grasses, lined with finer materials, placed in a shrub or woven to upright vegetation, usually at eye level or below. During migration and winter, often joins flocks with other warblers.
Forages by gleaning foliage for a variety of insects and other small prey, and occasional fruit.
