Smallest of the white herons, Cattle Egrets are easily recognized by their short necks, comparatively short bills, and upland foraging habits. Adults are white overall, with a relatively short yellow bill and yellow legs and feet. During the breeding season, buffy-orange plumes appear on the crown, breast, and lower back. The bill is reddish at the base, fading to yellow at the tip, and the legs become dark reddish. Juveniles are white overall with black bill, legs and feet.

Voice:

Usually quiet away from nest. Makes a harsh rack-rack when approaching nesting sites.

Habitat:

Nests in colonies with other heron species, building nests in small trees and shrubs. Often forages in open pastures around livestock, as well as agricultural fields and wetland edges.

Behavior:

Often associates with cattle and other grazing animals, capturing prey disturbed by grazers or farm machinery.

Feeding:

Eats a wide variety of insects, small amphibians and reptiles, occasionally small birds.
