Though superficially similar to other North American blackbirds, this species can be recognized by its smaller size, shorter more conical bill and shorter tail. Males have a glossy black body and dark chestnut-brown head, with a somewhat conical, stubby bill. Females are tan brown overall, with a dark eye, pale throat, and faint streaks underneath. Juveniles are like females but heavily streaked below, broad pale margins on the back and wing coverts create a scaly look to the wings and back. Freshly fledged juveniles are often reported as "mystery birds." During their first fall, immature males may exhibit an erratic combination of tan and glossy black feathers as they transition from juvenile to first basic plumage.
Length: 19 (cm) Wingspan: 31 (cm)
Voice:
Watery gurgles, piercing whistles, rattles.
Habitat:
Clearings, edges, suburbs, disturbed areas, and pastures. The Brown-headed Cowbird has benefited from an increased patchwork of forest clearings across North America.
Behavior:
Females do not construct a nest, instead they lay their eggs in nests of other birds. Cowbird populations have increased dramatically over last century and their brood parasitism has had a significant impact on populations of some songbirds, most notably Kirtland's Warbler, Golden-cheeked Warbler, and Black-capped Vireo. Often flocks with blackbirds in winter.
Feeding:
Eats insects and seeds, often feeding on the ground with its tail cocked up. Sometimes visits bird feeders.
