Similar in length, but slightly slimmer overall than Double-crested Cormorant. In flight, they hold their necks straighter; neck and head more streamlined than Double-crested. Adults are all black. During nesting season, they show some greenish iridescence, a bright azure blue throat pouch, and may have long white plumes extending from each cheek down the sides of the neck. All ages have dark bills that are slightly hooked at the tip. Non-breeding adults and immatures have a small tan throat patch. Hatch-year and immatures, which lack the gloss shown by adults, are dusky brown overall, paler tannish brown on the breast and foreneck, and show thin buffy edgings on wing coverts.
Length: 80 (cm) Wingspan: 120 (cm)

On the water, holds bill angled slightly upward.
Feeding:
Dives for fish in both the open ocean and in coastal estuaries.
Field Notes
Brandt's Cormorants seen at some distance in flight can be known by their lack of neck-kink (=not Double-crested) and by their head shape. Although the head is large and heavy, the bill is sufficiently deep at the base that there is no real abrupt profile break at the forehead (=not Pelagic). This gives the head the wedge-shaped look of a door-stop. Pelagic Cormorants have such a slim bill that there is a noticeable angle at the forecrown; their heads also are so small that it sometimes looks as if they're simply pushing a headless neck in front of them.
Citation: Personal Experience. I observe this regularly, highly confident.
