This larger, bulkier relative of Cedar Waxwing is generally found farther north. Gray overall with brown wash on the head. The bushy crest and black mask are similar to Cedar Waxwing, but with less white around the mask. The throat is black. White and yellow tips on the wing feathers create stripes running down the folded wing. The undertail coverts are a deep cinnamon color. In flight, short tail and pointed wings resemble European Starling. Juveniles are dull gray-brown with cinnamon undertail coverts and blurry streaks on the belly.

Voice:

A high metallic trill, lower and slower than that of Cedar Waxwing.

Habitat:

Nests in coniferous forests. In winter, found wherever fruit crops occur.

Behavior:

Highly nomadic, usually travels in flocks.

Feeding:

Feeds on fruit, buds, and sap. Flycatches and gleans insects.
