This species gets its name from the black stripe on the edge of its throat. While this mark is distinctive, it is sometimes hard to see. The upperparts are plain olive-green. The head shows a gray crown, whitish supercilium with an indistinct dark border, and blackish eye line. The underparts are dull white, with an olive wash on the sides and yellow undertail coverts. At close range, the eye is amber, not deep red like that of the similar Red-eyed Vireo.
