
Small, dark, and sparrow-like with a stubby conical bill. Short tail and dark legs. Male blackish on head and breast, with olive-green upperparts. Female pale gray belly and breast with gray head and olive-gray upperparts.

Habitat:
Found in scrubby areas, grassy and weedy fields, or overgrown lots.
Behavior:
Often visits bird feeders. Bounding flight is interspersed with fluttery wingbeats.
Feeding:
Mostly eats seeds, but also insects and fruits.
