This species is distinguished from the other two cuckoo species in North America by its all-dark bill, the small white tips on the tail feathers, and, at close range, by its red eye ring. The upperparts are dull gray-brown, with a slight olive cast. The underparts are dull white. Juvenile: Similar to adult, but with pale buffy throat and yellowish or greenish eye ring. Tail feathers show gray tips. May show rufous on primaries, like adult Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

Voice:

Song is a series of repeated cu notes, sometimes in a triplet pattern: cu cu cu cu cu cu, or cu-cu-cu cu-cu-cu. Lacks the growling kowlp notes of Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

Habitat:

Forest edges, thickets.

Behavior:

Often remains hidden in heavy cover. During the breeding season, more vocal during evening and night.

Feeding:

Bulk of diet consists of caterpillars. Also takes other large insects. Some fruit in winter.
