While very distinctive in alternate plumage, Bay-breasted Warblers in their first autumn plumage closely resemble young Blackpoll Warblers. In all plumages, the legs and feet are usually all dark. Alternate Male: The black face is framed by a rich chestnut crown, buffy sides of the neck, and more rich chestnut on the throat, upper breast, and sides. The back is gray or olive-gray with dark streaks. The wings show two bold white wing bars. The belly and vent are very pale yellow or buff. White spots are visible on the outer tail feathers in flight. Alternate Female: Shows the same pattern as alternate male, but with a split pale eye ring on a mottled dark face. The upper breast and sides show much paler chestnut than on the male. Basic Adult: Olive-yellow upperparts with fine dark streaking on the back and two white wing bars. Grayish rump on males, greenish on females. The underparts are unmarked pale yellowish except for a chestnut wash on the sides and flanks of males. Females may show a buffy wash on the sides and flanks. Juvenile: Like basic female, but with even less color on the sides and flanks, and less distinct streaking on the back.
