This small goose is a rare visitor from Europe. Single birds in North America have long been presumed escapees, but there is increasing evidence that at least some are legitimate vagrants. The mostly white face contrasts with the otherwise black nape, neck, and breast. A dark line extends through the lores to the base of the dark stubby bill. Underparts are white, with pale gray barring on the flanks. The back and upper surface of the wings are silvery-gray with bold black barring. The white V-shaped rump band is visible in flight. Feet and legs are black.
