Common in eastern North America, the male Baltimore Oriole is distinctive and showy, with a black hood, back, wings, and tail; bright orange underparts; and orange and white wing coverts. Females and immatures are more drab yellow to yellow-orange overall, brightest on the breast, without any black on the head. In flight, corners of the tail flash orange or yellow.

Voice:

Complex series of melodious warbles, phrases spaced apart; also rattles and short whistles.

Habitat:

Deciduous, riparian, and suburban woodlands; prefers tall trees.

Behavior:

Weaves a hanging sock-shaped nest, often high in a deciduous tree. Hybridizes with Bullock's Oriole where they overlap in the Great Plains.

Feeding:

Forages at all levels in tree canopy, gleaning foliage for insects. Also eats some fruit, and may visit backyard fruit feeders.
