This Asian species could be overlooked in a flock of similar Green-winged Teal. Male: Striking head pattern is distinctive, with dark crown, green nape, and buffy face with bold black line extending down from the eye. The breast is pinkish with black spots. The sides are gray with vertical white borders fore and aft. Undertail coverts are black. Long scapulars of rufous, black, and buff drape down over the sides. Green speculum is bordered by buff on the front edge, white on the back edge. Female: Very similar to female Green-winged Teal. Warm brown overall with pale belly. A whitish spot, surrounded by dark brown, occurs near the base of the bill. Two blurry dark lines extend back from the eye and on the cheek. Some birds show an additional dark line extending down from the eye. (It is unclear whether these birds are females or juvenile males.) The throat is unmarked whitish, which extends onto the cheek.
