
This boldly patterned thrush is a rare visitor from Mexico. Male: Blackish brown upperparts and upper breast form an extensive hood. Wings show a complex pattern of white and dark, including white tips on the tertials and a white spot at the base of the primaries. A dark band separates the white belly from the white undertail coverts. A band of white uppertail coverts separates the back from the tail. Tail has a white terminal band. Legs are pinkish. Females: Overall pattern similar to male, but the upperparts are warm brown with pale streaking and a light supercillium. The light areas on the wing are a pale gray. Juvenile: Similar to adult, but with extensive light spangles over the upperparts, a dark scaly pattern on the underparts, and a contrasting dark eye line and pale supercillium.
