
A small brown Old World flycatcher with a bold eyering and short tail. Small, black bill with yellowish base of lower mandible. Gray brown upperparts with whitish edges on the tertials and secondaries, whitish fringes on the greater coverts form an indistinct wingbar, mostly whitish underparts, gray on the sides of chest. Dark legs. Juvenile has white spots above and thin, dark scaling on breast. Distinguished from other Muscicapa flycatchers by shorter wings, unmarked sides, and bold eyering (only Dark-sided has comparable eyering); also has pale base to lower mandible and a pale supraloral line.

Habitat:
Primarily breeds in deciduous woodlands; winters in a variety of open woodlands, gardens, or parks.
Behavior:
Flycatches from exposed branches in the canopy, often returning to the same perch. Occasionally flicks wings when foraging.
Feeding:
Feeds on insects.
