
Fairly small nighthawk. Long, dark wings with white bar halfway between wingtip, and bend in wing. Notched tail finely barred with dark tip. Brownish-black upperparts with light brown flecks. Darkest on back and crown. Warm brown face. White throat. Underparts buffy golden-brown with fine dark barring. Very similar to Common and Lesser Nighthawks. Lesser is paler above with paler and more buffy underwing coverts. Common is larger with darker, less buffy underwing coverts and underparts.

Habitat:
Inhabits arid scrubby areas, savannas, fields, or open pine woodlands.
Behavior:
Most active at dusk, night, or dawn. Usually found hawking insects high overhead. Drinks water by skimming water's surface in flight. Roosts on trees or posts.

Feeds on insects.
