
Named for its ragged patch of head feathers resembling gray hair in alternate plumage, the diminutive Ancient Murrelet has a black head and bib, partial white collar, gray back, straw-yellow bill, and white underparts. In winter, the white head streaks fade and the black bib is encroached by white. At a distance, the contrasting gray back separates Ancient from other murrelets and alcids.

Habitat:
Open ocean and coastal waters. Nests in burrow under tree roots.
Behavior:
Visits nest site after dark. Usually seen alone or in small groups. Holds head more elevated in flight than other murrelets.
Feeding:
Dives and swims after crustaceans.
