Field Notes

I have been trying to sex the basic plumage birds in these photos. It seems the brown-olive-gray tones can vary within and between the subspecies enough to make this a tough task. Females have brown lesser coverts, males have olive to olive-yellow lesser coverts, problem is it appears these are covered by the soft pillow textured scapulars in these pictures. I did notice that 34 appears to be C t tristis , the eastern subspecies. He has a larger black cap and is a brighter yellow.
Citation: Personal Experience. I recently observed this, confidence uncertain at this time.

I used to have gold finches at my feeder when I lived in Pullman, WA. I looked through the ID photos and the only female is the front view photo by Marjolene Schat. All the others are American Gold Finch males. The bright yellow are in breeding plumage, and the dull ones are off season drab plumage.
